Alex Crank Benefit/Revolution Preview

Some (intentially) light contaminated Holga images from Alex's benefit: TOP: The great Babs, rock and roll chick extraordinaire. BOTTOM: Alex's brother, Ian.
The benefit for Alex (see previous post) this past Saturday at Connolly's was apparently a resounding success, featuring The Peace Group, a great heartfelt set by Ian Cathcart (as always), and an outstanding set by the great Jay Spero and Trudy. Jay, in addition to other tunes, started off with some classic Brown Ploppy! (btw, I don't think I could ever play a BP song on the radio, as the heads of FCC staff might explode! But YOU should seek out some tunes of theirs) Some pics to be published at a later date..........as I've a few e-mails inquiring about Alex/Cranks info, I'll try and play a few tunes this Tuesday....
Working on a very special guest of the political nature for Tuesday's Revolution, schedules allowing...stayed tuned.......
Cheers!
Finn

ALEX CRANK BENEFIT SHOW 1/12/08

This Saturday there's a benefit for our bud, the great punk/rock guitarist/singer/songwriter ALEX CATHCART (nee ALEX CRANK, among other incarnations). Alex sang & played guitar for bands including Marky Ramone & The Intruders, Lourds, The Westones, The Barflys, The F3s, pigEARTH, Sport Murphy's band, Lancaster County Prison, &, of course, The Cranks among others. He's done everything from playing EVERY bar in Queens to touring the world with Marky. A handsome motherfucker with a pure rocker's heart, Alex was struck with ALS a few years ago, an awful disease which has sapped his resources but will never dim his sly wit and punk soul. (Alex has turned to writing essays and poetry as a creative outlet. I'll get a link up for some of those shortly.) A bunch of folks are getting together to play at Connolly's Irish Pub at 280 Hempstead Ave in Malverne (516-887-5160) to raise some scratch for housing, medical expenses, etc. BUT sympathy for Alex ain't why you oughta be there: come down to watch Peace Group, members of The Westones, Lancaster County Prison, FUB, The Cranks, Finn & His Swinging Buddhas, and god knows who else blow the roof off the place. It'll be rockin', as Alex will have it no other way! I'll try and slip in a few Alex tunes on this week's radio show, otherwise, I hope to see you on Saturday night.
Cheers!

New Years Day '08

New Year's Day 2008. Port Jeff Lanes. For years, bowling on NYs was a tradition for me. Used to be a drunken/drugged affair. Now, armed with simply a hip flask and a 15 pounder, Alison & I bowled like motherfuckers (well, we broke 100 anyway) until the screaming children arrived.....a tradition renewed. Here's Alison calculating her spin...
So this is the new radio show blog for Finn's Revolution!, huh? Let's kick it off on this first day of '08 with my as-of-the-moment BEST OF 2007 list, shall we? You can hear these recordings live on the airwaves tonight.

Top 20 Albums

1. RADIOHEAD  In Rainbows
2. THURSTON MOORE  Trees Outside the Academy
3. ANDREW BIRD  Armchair Apocrypha
4. TURBO FRUITS  s/t
5. THE WHITE STRIPES  Icky Thump
6. BOOK OF KNOTS  Traineater
7. ROBERT WYATT  Comicopera
8. JOE STRUMMER (et al)  The Future is Unwritten
9. SONIC YOUTH  Daydream Nation Deluxe Edition
10. EARTHLESS  Rhythms From A Cosmic Sky
11. THE STOOGES  The Weirdness
12. WAX TAILOR  Hope & Sorrow
13. ANIMAL COLLECTIVE  Strawberry Jam
14. BLONDE REDHEAD  23
15. BLACK MOTH SUPER RAINBOW  Dandelion Gum
16. M.I.A.  Kala
17. THE BEASTIE BOYS  The Mix-Up
18. Aa  gAame
19. PAMELIA KURSTIN  Thinking Out Loud
20. MAGIK MARKERS  Boss

Of course, the following could also easily slip in there, too, depending on me mood: the fine I'M NOT THERE Soundtrack, CARIBOU, BJORK's Volta, PISSED JEANS' Hope For Men, the great SIX ORGANS OF ADMITTANCE album Shelter From The Ash, DEVENDRA BANHART's Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Mountain, LAVENDER DIAMOND, PANDA BEAR's Person Pitch, and most certainly ROBYN HITCHCOCK's I Wanna Go Backwards collection. As for a pure (ie, no new tunes/remixes/outakes) compilation/reissue album, gotta go old-school with the STAX 50th Anniversary collection, and as to live, JOHN CALE's Circus Live. Before I continue to second guess meself (I'll leave that to you), from myself, Alison & Miss Ira Bean, I bid you a fond Happy 2008......
Cheers!
